If you farm or ranch in northeast Nebraska, you’ve probably already tried the usual options — DSL that crawls, fixed wireless that drops every time it rains, or a cell hotspot that can’t keep up with more than one device. Starlink has been the biggest jump in rural internet quality I’ve seen, but it’s not automatically the right fit for every property. Here’s what actually matters.
The short answer
For most farms and acreages I’ve installed it on, Starlink is a real upgrade — often 10–20x faster than what was there before, with none of the distance-from-town limitations that kill DSL and fixed wireless. If you’ve got a reasonably clear view of the sky, it almost always works well.
What can get in the way
- Trees and grain bins. The dish needs a mostly unobstructed view of the northern sky. A single tall bin or shelterbelt in the wrong spot can cause intermittent dropouts.
- Mounting location. Roof mounts are common, but not always ideal for cable routing into the house or shop. I walk the property and check for the best mix of sky visibility and a clean cable run before recommending a spot.
- Multiple buildings. If you need connectivity in the house and the shop and the barn, that’s a network design question, not just a Starlink question — usually solved with a point-to-point Wi-Fi bridge or a second access point.
What it’s genuinely good for
- Calving cameras and livestock monitoring systems that need to stream reliably
- Precision ag software, GPS correction services, and cloud-based farm management tools
- Remote work, kids doing schoolwork, and just not fighting your internet every evening
My honest recommendation
